Resolved Question: What is the longest
I'm looking for the two locations on Earth that are at the greatest distance (air line) from each other, while travelling from one to the other by railway is still possible without ever changing into other modes of transport along the way (except for short walking distances when changing trains). It could be from somewhere in Portugal to somewhere in China or Korea, does anyone have other ideas? I just tried out in Google Earth: Starting from Lagos (Portugal) - the station closest to the southwest end of Europe - the farthest seems to be a place named Phan Rang Tháp Chàm in Vietnam, at a distance of 11560 km.
Singapore would be at 11890 km, but the railway system of Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore is not connected to those of Vietnam or China. I just checked on a combination of http://fahrplan.oebb.at/ and http://www.seat61.com/ - it looks like it takes 10 days from Lagos to Beijing and 4 days from Beijing to Hanoi, but as the trains Moskva - Beijing and Beijing - Hanoi only go twice weekly and don't connect on the same day, a stopover in China is inevitable.
